Parathyroid CT Scan

A
high resolution parathyroid CT
(Computerized Tomography ) scan is used to help localize a parathyroid tumor when a parathyroid scan and
were unsuccessful at localizing the tumor. This technique has proven to be increasingly accurate in localizing a enlarged parathyroid adenoma in an aberrant location, such as when a parathyroid gland exists in the chest rather than the neck.
A CT scan takes detailed pictures of the body through x-rays. Traditional CT scans are not very good at identifying parathyroid glands. However, newer techniques are better in localizing parathyroid glands in both the neck and chest. A parathyroid CT scan takes less than 30 minutes to complete. The scan requires a radiologist skilled at looking for abnormal parathyroid glands.
Although parathyroid CT is not always a first line modality; if a Sestamibi scan of the parathyroids and ultrasound are negative then a CT of the parathyroids is performed to help identify a parathyroid adenoma in an aberrant location. A CT scan is quicker and less expensive than an MRI.
