Parathyroid Micrographs

This is a gallery of parathyroid micrographs showing the microscopic features of parathyroid adenomas.  The typical histolocial picture for an adenoma is an increased number of chief cells with scattered oncocytes and decreased glandular fat.  The presence of normal parathyroid gland at the periphera of an adenoma is a helpful feature, but this is only found in about 50% of removed adenoma.  Chief cells are compact with round basophilic nuclei and a moderate amount of cytoplasm; the cytoplasm is strongly eosinophic and mitochondria-rich .  The adenoma has a capsule that separates it from the normal parathryoid gland.
