SPECT Scanning of Parathyroid Tumors
SPECT (Single Photon Emission Computerized Tomography) scanning is a 3-D method of Parathyroid Sestamibi Scan. With this method 3-dimensional images of the parathyroid can be taken after Technetium-99m Sestamibi is injected. This method is 2-3 percent more accurate than a standard parathyroid scan. During the scan, many images are taken around the patient's head covering different angles. This information is presented as cross-sectional slices, but can be freely reformatted or manipulated as required through a computer.
SPECT scanning becomes important when ordinary Sestamibi scans are inconclusive. It is also useful when a more detailed anatomic localization of the parathyroid is necessary.
